Summer Garage Saleing

June 26th, 2011 | Posted by Sandy Garrett in Thrifty Finds

There are a lot of reasons I love this time of year, but one reason is – I love garage sales!  We can only shop garage sales from June till about September.  The rest of the time it’s just too cold and rainy.  So I love to take advantage of the good weather to get out and see what treasures I can find.

I really had fun at the sale pictured below.

To begin with – what a cute house!  The yard and the wrap around porch was packed with things to look at and it was such a beautiful day.  I had such fun – wish I could find more sales like this.  I ended up going back to purchase an item I passed up the first time and was happy to find out it was still there waiting for me.

And look at this cute potting shed!  There were two more similar houses on the property.  The owner told me that her husband had built them out of old wood.

The first thing I spotted was this darling cup and saucer.  I had to have it so grabbed it right away.  I also bought a couple of bread plates.  The one behind the cup and saucer and the matching one pictured below.

Then I picked up this cup and saucer and several more small dishes.  I was so glad I decided to stop at this sale.

At another sale, I found this cute clock, flowers, book and plastic tablecloth that will be perfect for our summer picnics.

Another view of the clock.

And here is where it ended up.  In one of my fireplace bookcases along with some flowers purchased at another garage sale.  I love the quality of older silk flowers and plants so I like to pick them up whenever I find them.

Got this at the same sale as the clock.  Such a cute picture of old time school children and it looks perfect next to my antique hoosier.  I would have taken a picture, but we are in the process of painting our master bedroom and the hoosier is piled high with things from the bedroom so that will be for another post.

Here’s a closeup.  So cute!

I always look forward to this time of year.  I’m lucky – because Mr. CSD loves garage sales as much as I do so it gives us a chance to drive around, look at houses, find a treasure or two and just enjoy spending some relaxing time together.  Hopefully this is the first of many great sales this year.

Wasn’t it cute? The lot it was sitting on was great too. Lots of trees. It was the best garage sale I’ve been to in awhile. Bought several things and was tempted to buy more.

  • I love yard sale season, too! Don’t you just love it when you find a winner of a sale? You found some wonderful things. I especially love the sweet teacups and the clock.

Tammy – I really enjoyed this yard sale. Not only did I get some great stuff, but the lady that owned the house was so nice and even showed me around her yard.

  • Deana Wood says:

    Oh I love that house!

  • Sandy Garrett says:

    Deana – Isn’t it a great house?!

  • I love love the clock! And the house is too sweet you are right. I wouldn’t have been able to focus on buying for walking the property.

  • Sandy Garrett says:

There was so much to look at between the property and the sale. I have to admit that I went back twice. The first time to take pictures (I’ve got to remember to take my camera when I go garage sales) and the second time to buy a white hobnail lamp that I just couldn’t get out of my mind.

  • Wow – i love that home & the antique shed is darling! the clock you brought home is perfect~ xoox, traacie

Wow, you got some great finds! That house is to die for. You are lucky your husband likes yards sales, mine sure doesn’t.

What great finds! And yes, you ARE lucky! My DH hates garage sales… The good thing is – he likes garden tours!

  • Sandy Garrett says:

Garden tours are great too! Haven’t been to one in a long time though. I am very fortunate that my husband and I have similar interests. We both like to look through antique stores as well as garage sales.

  • Simone says:

  • Cute stuff! Cute house, too. I just love all the great stuff you can find at a yard sale.

  • Cathy says:

    Hi,
I would love to go yard saling but I get this funny feeling I’m intruding. Not that anyone makes me feel like it is just that I do. Anyone else feel like this? What if you don’t buy anything? Do you just leave? Do you say anything? When you first get there, do you say anything (other than Hi or Hello or whatever? I would be going alone as no one I know likes to go yard saling. Anyone else do this alone? All funny questions I know but maybe if I had some answers I might be more than inclined to go to some. I know that once I do a few I’ll be OK but I just need to get through that first few!!!
    Someone? anyone? help.
    Cathy

    Hi Cathy -

I know it can seem like you are intruding, but actually people want you to come and look at what they are selling. Look at it like little “mini stores”. Maybe you could ask a friend to go with you the first few times even if that’s not their favorite thing to do. I have had garage sales (doing one this summer) and go to them with others and alone. They are a lot of fun, so the best thing is to just relax and enjoy.

When I arrive, I say “Hi”. Most people are very friendly so if I feel like talking I do, if not I just look around. Just relax and be yourself. Some people feel like they need to buy something at every sale, but it’s not necessary. I hate to throw anything away that someone might have a use for, so having a garage sale is a great way to pass things along to someone who needs them and make a little money in the process, but I don’t want people to buy something they don’t want. If I don’t find anything I want, I just say “thank you” or thank you for letting me look”. There really isn’t any wrong way to do it.

Anyone else have any tips or ideas to help Cathy?

    Sandy
